7 wesentliche Tipps für die Autovermietung in Bulgarien

Bulgaria is a fantastic country to explore by car, but there are a few local quirks worth knowing before you set off.

1. Check What Insurance is Included

Always confirm that CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) and theft protection are included in your rate. At East Rent they always are — but not all companies include these.

2. Vignette is Mandatory

All cars using Bulgarian motorways must display a valid vignette (road tax sticker). East Rent cars always have a current vignette — you don't need to purchase one separately.

3. Speed Cameras Are Everywhere

Bulgaria has a large network of speed cameras, especially on the main routes. Fines can be issued to foreign drivers. Stick to the limits: 50 in towns, 90 on roads, 130 on motorways.

4. Carry Cash for Parking

Many city-centre parking zones (the blue and green zones in Varna) require you to buy a paper voucher from a machine or via SMS. Card parking is not yet universal.

5. Cross-Border Travel

If you plan to take the car to Romania, Greece, or Turkey, tell us when booking. Cross-border permission must be noted on the rental agreement. An additional fee may apply.

6. Inspect the Car Carefully

Before driving away, walk around the car and make sure any existing scratches or dents are noted on the handover form. Take photos with your phone — timestamped photos are your best protection.

7. Fuel Type

Always confirm whether your car is diesel or petrol before filling up. Many modern compact cars in Bulgaria run on diesel — putting petrol in a diesel tank is costly. The fuel cap label will always tell you.
